“I desire so to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end…I have lost every other friend on earth, I shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside of me.”

The following quote by Lincoln is arguably of far greater import “In Light of the Anniversary of September 11″, particularly if one is willing to seek truth and not simply adopt sectarian or partisan dogma. Keep in mind September 11 is also the anniversary of the overthrow of the democratically elected President of Chile by a CIA-backed military junta led by the dictatorial Pinochet. The ramifications are quite astonishing.
“What constitutes the bulwark of our own liberty and independence? It is not our frowning battlements, our bristling sea coasts, the guns of our war steamers, or the strength of our gallant and disciplined army…. Our reliance is in the love of liberty which God has implanted in us…. Destroy this spirit, and you have planted the seeds of despotism at your own doors. Familiarize yourselves with the chains of bondage and you prepare your own limbs to wear them. Accustomed to trample on the rights of others, you have lost the genius of your own independence and become the fit subjects of the first cunning tyrant who rises among you.”
– Abraham Lincoln, Edwardsville, Illinois, September 11, 1858 — source: Seldes, The Great Thoughts, p. 270
I just found this blog today. I have been a great fan of Lincoln for years. Seems to be a debate going on currently comparing the historic importance of Lincoln v. Darwin. But certainly Lincoln’s political stature and poise make him a clear winner. Love the blog. Thank you.
In fact I do blog.
